Discover this unique example of Leonardo da Vinci’s architecture on the estate of the Monthoiron castle.
Built at the very beginning of the 16th century according to original plans by Leonardo da Vinci, the star-shaped plan is the only architectural concretisation by the Florentine genius who was living in the King’s court in Amboise at the time.
Forgotten for 5 centuries and rediscovered at the end of the 20th century, this exceptional monument shows how evolved defensive architecture was at the beginning of the Renaissance period. And there are even more mysteries to be unveiled...
Visits 1 hour 30 minutes minimum with options suited to all members of the public.
Visit 1: self-guided with a tablet videoguide for discovering the tower’s mysteries through video, virtual-reality reconstruction, quizzes and games. Then enter the centre of the monument to discover the vaulted dome over the ground floor, where the film “Léonard, l’ambition secrete” (Leonardo’s secret ambition) is projected. Finally, wander through the bivouac laying siege on the tower all summer-long to learn about the different techniques used to attack at the beginning of the 16th century.
Visit 2 : a treasure hunt “Le Trésor de Léonard” with characters from the “Léonard Génie” comic book series. Ideal for children who hunt for the treasure around the fortified tower of the Monthoiron castle. With each riddle, they learn and laugh about the history of Leonardo da Vinci’s castle.
